A pedestrian spy thriller, " Echelon Vendetta", from David Stone is the first book of series featuring CIA "cleaner" Micah Dalton as protagonist. Dalton's best friend Porter Naumann has been brutally murdered in Italy. Naumann also a CIA operative is stationed out of UK but working in Italy on behalf of "Burke and Single" Bank. This debut novel by the pseudonymous Stone, reportedly a former soldier and intelligence officer, made critic Janet Maslin's list of Da Vinci Code clones in a recent New York Times article. But it doesn't really belong there. This author had something more interesting in mind. The Echelon Vendetta is in part a buddy story, but with an unusual twist. Although he's deceased, Porter Naumann is a heck of a character whom the author, like William Shakespeare before him, decided to keep around. Once it settles down The Echelon Vendetta becomes a solid old fashioned but contemporary espionage thriller-cum-detective story. In the final third Stone manages to make amends for a lot of the book's early problems with a satisfying conclusion that also sets up the next book in the series The Orpheus Deception. Its a measure of how much Stone manages to recover from a very shaky opening that I'm seriously considering giving this next Micah Dalton adventure a try.
